The Best Giro Winner Since Coppi

SPECIAL NOTE: For the first time in Giro history the start is from the foreign country of San Marino.

Newspaper headlines heralded Vittorio Adorni’s 1965 Giro victory as the best since Fausto Coppi. Adorni won the stage 13 mountain time trial to take the race lead but needed a successful attack on stage 19 to secure the overall victory. Stage 19 was 282 km from Saas Fee to Madesimo. In the style of the great Fausto Coppi race leader Adorni attacked on the final climb, the Passo dell Spluga and soloed to the finish for a 3’33” stage win.

Vittorio Adorni cruised into Milan for the 11’26” Giro d’Italia victory.

SPECIAL NOTE: Five years after the untimely death of Italian legend Fausto Coppi, Giro organizers established a new prize (the Cima Coppi) for the rider who win the climb over the highest point in that year’s race. The first award was on the stage 20 climb of the Passo Stelvio, won by Italian Graziano Battistini.
